Keep little ones cool, confident, and safe this summer.

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy fun in the water. Whether it's at the pool, beach, or even just a paddling pool in the garden. But for babies and toddlers, extra care is needed to make sure every splash is safe and enjoyable. At Baby Swimmers, safety is at the heart of everything we do. Here are our top summer swim safety tips for your little ones:

1. Always keep eyes (and hands) on your child

Drowning can happen in seconds and in just a few inches of water. Whether you're in a busy pool or a quiet paddling area, active supervision is essential. Stay within arm’s reach at all times.

2. Choose swimwear with built-in UV protection

Babies’ skin is extra sensitive. Opt for full-coverage swimsuits with UPF 50+ and wide-brimmed hats to protect against sunburn, especially during peak sun hours (11am–3pm).

3. Apply baby-safe sunscreen - even on cloudy days

Use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen suitable for babies over 6 months. Apply at least 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every 2 hours, or more often if in and out of the water.

  1. Check water temperature

Babies can get cold quickly. Whether indoors or out, water should be at least 30°C (or warmer for younger babies). Keep sessions short if the water feels cool, and wrap your baby in a warm towel immediately afterward.

5. Be paddling pool smart

Empty paddling pools after each use to prevent accidents. If using one for play, keep it shaded, clean, and check the temperature regularly.

6. Practice water safety routines early

Encourage your little one to wait for your signal before entering the water, and gently introduce safety cues like holding onto the pool edge. These habits help build water confidence and awareness.

7. Stay hydrated & snack smart

Water play can be tiring and dehydrating. Offer regular drinks and light, easy-to-digest snacks, especially after swimming.

8. Enrol in Baby Swimming lessons

Swimming lessons offer structured water exposure and safety training from an early age. At Baby Swimmers, our instructors teach vital water safety skills while nurturing your baby’s natural love of water in a fun, relaxed environment.

With a little preparation and awareness, summer swimming can be safe, fun, and developmentally enriching. Whether you’re at home or away on holiday, keep these tips in mind to ensure happy, splashy memories all season long!
